QUICK REMINDERS:

Spring Break-March 23-27

Dear Parents,

Thank you for coming to conferences! These meetings allow us to partner in your child’s growth and provide
them with a maximum amount of support. Thank you for all your support.  I talked to many of you about the
importance of practicing basic math facts consistently. Time in the car provides a good opportunity to orally
practice and memorize facts.
Flash Monster provides great free online flash card practice: https://www.factmonster.com/math/flashcards

Literacy:
We hope you enjoyed reading our Prairie Dog opinion texts this week.  We worked hard on getting them
published! This week students completed an informative piece about how prairie dogs are similar and different
from the kind of dog people keep as pets and wrote a narrative about a day in the life of a prairie dog.

Math:
We completed our Geometry unit this week and took our chapter test.  We also started our next unit on
Fractions. By the end of this unit, students will understand:
How to write a fraction and a unit fraction for a part of a whole and for a number on a number line
Write equivalent fractions including fractions that are equivalent to whole numbers
Compare two fractions with the same denominator OR the same numerator
Solve real world problems involving fractions

Social Studies:
This week we completed a regions map of the US and started watching short videos and taking notes about
each region.

I hope you have a wonderful weekend.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Galt

QUICK REMINDERS:
March 3rd and 5th-Parent Teacher Conferences

Dear Parents,

Our parent teacher conferences are next week.  I look forward to meeting with you during our scheduled time on March 3rd or 5th.

As most of you know, third graders will be taking the CMAS tests this year.  This is a state standardized test. The tests have been scheduled for third grade on April 7th, 8th, 9th.  Students will complete the math CMAS test in the morning on those days. On April 14th, 15th, and 16th students will complete the language arts CMAS test in the afternoon. If you are planning appointments or a trip, please plan outside of the CMAS testing dates if possible. It would be so helpful to have all the students complete the tests during our scheduled testing weeks. Thank you!

 Literacy:
We are reviewing opinion, informational, and narrative writing styles.  Last week, we read a text called Prairie Dogs. Students used information from this text to write an opinion piece about whether they would want to live near a prairie dog town if they were a farmer. This week students wrote an informative piece about how prairie dogs are similar and different from the kind of dog people keep as pets. Lastly, students will write a narrative about a day in the life of a prairie dog.

Students have also been working on a health research project with Mrs. Sbrocca.  Please ask your child about this project. They made some great videos to share their learning!

Math:
We are well into our Geometry unit.  This week we spent time reviewing attributes of quadrilaterals and finding the perimeter and area of geometric shapes.

Students are learning many new geometry vocabulary terms. Please review them with your child: angle, decagon, hexagon, octagon, polygon, pentagon, right angle, parallel, parallelogram, rectangle, rhombus, square, trapezoid, perimeter and area. This will be a huge help for this unit. Please don't forget to keep up with their multiplication, division, addition, and subtraction tables! We are using all four operations in this unit.

Our unit assessment will be next Wednesday.

Social Studies:
This week we continued our unit on Regions of the United States by learning about how to find places on a map using latitude and longitude. We also worked on building vocabulary to support our learning during this unit.

Sincerely,
Mrs. Galt

Dear Parents,

Please remind your child to bring their recorder for music. Next week, we have music on Tuesday and Friday.
Also, if you have not had a chance to pay for your child’s recorder please do so as soon as possible.

We have scheduled our third field trip, to the Denver Museum of Nature and Science, for Tuesday, February 11th.
You can use the following link to sign the permission slip and pay the field trip fee. You can also let us know
if you would like to be a chaperone for this trip via the link- we will need parent volunteers!  In order to chaperone,
you must have completed a school background check. We would like to have at least 5 parents come with us.
Parents who chaperone will need to send in a check or cash for their entrance to the museum- $7. Parents are
not able to pay their portion online.  Thank you!

On Monday, we had our first lesson with Blue Sky Bridge. Hopefully your child shared the short handout that was sent home on Monday about body safety and the touching rules.  They will visit our classroom again on 1/27, 2/3, and 2/10.

Literacy:
We completed our humorous text set and completed a short opinion writing about which of the texts we read was
the funniest. We also started a realistic fiction genre study this week.
In writing, students wrote to a narrative prompt.  They read two texts and then had to write a letter to one of the
characters from the point of view of another character.

Math:
This week, we continued Unit 4, Addition and Subtraction of Multi-digit Numbers. We worked on rounding numbers
to the nearest hundred and ten.  Please practice rounding with your child at the store and when you are going out
to eat by asking questions like: About how much money do you think we are going to spend? Students also
explored strategies to add multi-digit numbers. Next week we will continue reviewing addition strategies and start
to explore multidigit subtraction with regrouping.

Science:
This week we continued our Metric Measurement and Matter unit.  We are investigating the characteristics of
the three states of matter: solid, liquid, and gas. We are also learning about how matter can change phases.

Please help your child to remember to complete their homework each night and return it the next day.
Often, at this time of year, we can see motivation for school drop a bit. Encourage your child to continue to
do their best work and try their hardest while they are in school. We appreciate all of your support from home.

Enjoy the long weekend.
Sincerely,

Mrs. Galt

QUICK REMINDERS:
January 20, 2020- No School- Martin Luther King, Jr. Day

Dear Parents,

Please remind your child to bring their recorder for music. Next week, we have music on Wednesday.

Happy New Year! I hope you had a wonderful winter break. It was great to see everyone and jump back into our work.  I am always impressed by the academic, social, and emotional growth that takes place during the second half of our third grade year. Please continue to communicate with me about how I can best support your child.

Next week third grade will be starting a 4 week long unit on personal body safety. We are honored to have Blue Sky Bridge, a group dedicated to ending child abuse, here each Monday. Hopefully you were able to have any questions about this program answered at the parent event earlier this week or you can talk to Erin McCort, erin.mccort@bvsd.org, our counselor, if you have further questions.

Students are coming home with information about the Kids Heart Challenge in their Friday folders. If you would like to donate to this cause, the best way to do this is online.

Literacy:
We are reading a humorous text set together and discussing what makes stories funny.  Providing evidence for our thinking is a major focus of our work. For example, “I think it was funny when…...because…….”
Students are also working on writing short personal narratives to a prompt on their Chromebooks.

Math:
We started Unit 4, Addition and Subtraction of Multidigit Numbers this week and spent a few days reviewing place value. Please continue to support your child with regular multiplication, division, addition and subtraction math fact practice.  Also, your child is welcome to complete iReady math lessons at home for extra practice.

Science:
We are well into our  Metric Measurement and Matter unit. We are investigating the metric system of measurement and have used a balance scales to measure mass in grams, syringes to measure volume in milliliters, and meter sticks to measure distance.  We are also learning about the three states of matter and how matter can change.

Have a wonderful weekend.
Sincerely,

Mrs. Galt
