Friday, January 19th, 2018

Next week we have PE on Tuesday and Friday.

Please remind your child to bring their recorder for music. Next week, we have music on Monday.

Dear Parents,

We have been working very hard since we returned from winter break. Here is a recap of what we are working on in third grade.

Next Thursday, January 25th, is our field trip to the Denver Museum of Nature and Science. If you have not had a chance to send in the permission slip and $10 fee, please do that as soon as possible.  Students will need to bring lunch for the field trip. We have a few parent volunteers: Stephanie Schwab and Nancy Saha. If you are planning on going and don't see your name, please let me know, or if you are not planning on going and are on the list, let me know as soon as possible. It would be great to have a few more approved chaperones join us, so please let me know if you have time.  Thank you! This is a trip that will have parents in charge of small groups for part of the time. Parent volunteers will need to bring $5 for the IMAX movie and a lunch. Parent volunteers should be in our classrooms that morning at 8:45. Thank you!

Literacy:
We are enjoying our fairy tales exploration.  We have read the classic and fractured tales for The Three Little Pigs, Goldilocks and The Three Bears, and Cinderella.  Next week, we will read Three Billy Goats Gruff and students will begin writing their own version of a well known fairy tale over the next few weeks.  Please ask your child what tale they are thinking about rewriting, have them summarize the original, and share their ideas about how they plan to create their own version of the story.  Thank you!

Math:
We are well into Unit 4, Addition and Subtraction of Multidigit Numbers. This week we continued adding three digit numbers with regrouping.  Many students have strong fluency and accuracy with this skill!  We also started subtracting three digit numbers.
Our next math homework packet was sent home on Monday.  It needs to be completed by Monday, February 5th.  It is important for your child to continue to practice with concepts already presented so that they can embed them in their learning. You and your child can make decisions about when to complete this work, but we encourage you to have them solve some of the problems each day after school so that it doesn’t become a huge burden just before it is due.

Science:
We started our new unit in Science, Metric Measurement and Matter. This unit will be about 3 weeks long. This week we reviewed the metric system of measurement. Students will use balance scales to measure mass in grams, syringes and graduated cylinders to measure capacity in milliliters, and meter sticks to measure distance in centimeters and meters.  We will also be learning about the three states of matter and how matter can change.

Homework Ideas for Next Week
  • Complete the mystery state assignment.
  • Write the weekly Dictado sentence each night in the Mystery State notebook.
  • ReadingPlus or iReady lessons at least once per week.
