Friday, January 11th

Next week we have PE on Wednesday.

Dear Parents,

Happy New Year! I hope you had a wonderful winter break. It was great to see everyone and jump back into our work.  I am always impressed by the academic, social, and emotional growth that takes place during the second half of our third grade year. Please continue to communicate with me about how I can best support your child.

We are beginning to implement the Fountas and Pinnell Word Study program, which is part of our new literacy materials. Therefore, weekly Dictado will no longer be assigned.  The word study program incorporates phonics, spelling, and vocabulary lessons.
There is not a home component to this program, so we are sending home the kindergarten-3rd grade “Must Write” word list in Friday folders.  Please consider helping your child practice spelling these words at home. Thank you for your support!

Students are coming home with information about Jump Rope For Heart, now called Kids Heart Challenge, in their Friday Folders.

Literacy:
This week students spent time talking and writing about highlights of their winter break.  Students also worked on publishing an opinion piece. We are looking forward to sharing these with you during our February parent- teacher conferences.

Math:
The graded unit test for Measurement, Time and Graphing is in your child’s Friday folder. This week, we started Unit 4, Addition and Subtraction of Multi-digit Numbers.  There is a letter about the first part of this unit in your child’s Friday folder, please take some time to look over this resource.

Science:
This week we continued our Metric Measurement and Matter unit.  We are investigating the characteristics of the three states of matter: solid, liquid, and gas. We will also learn about how matter can change phases.

Homework for next week:

  • ReadingPlus or iReady lessons at least once per week.
  • Read at least 20 min nightly.
