Dear Parents,

Our parent/ teacher conferences are February 11th and 13th. An email about signing up will be sent by the office soon. They will be making the sign-ups available to parents beginning January 28 at 6 a.m.  I look forward to meeting with each of you.

Valentine’s Day is right around the corner.  We will not have a class party on this day, but we will enjoy exchanging Valentines with classmates.  We will have a spring class party on Friday, March 22nd from 1:30 to 2:30.

If your child chooses to bring Valentine cards to school, they need to have one for each child in our class. Valentines should be brought to school on February 14th.  I will provide a container for them to collect their Valentines. Handmade cards are encouraged. Here is a list of student names to help with this task. Thank you for your continued support.

Literacy:
We are reading and writing narratives.  Please engage your child in telling stories about their day and family experiences.  We often say, “Think it, say it, write it,” as we work through the writing process. I also encourage you to write stories with your child, taking turns to write a few sentences.  This can be an ongoing project, and a fun way to engage in the narrative writing experience. We are talking about story elements such as: characters, setting, beginning, middle, end, problem/conflict, and solution.

Our new word study program is proving to be quite engaging for our students.  Each lesson that we have completed has been interactive and allows students to extend their learning to their personal level.

Math:
We are well into Unit 4, Addition and Subtraction of Multi-digit Numbers. This week we continued adding three digit numbers with regrouping.  Many students have strong fluency and accuracy with this skill! We also started subtracting three digit numbers and will continue with this next week.

Science:
Our Metric Measurement and Matter unit is coming to a close.   We will begin a social studies unit about regions of the United States late next week.

Friday, January 18th

Next week we have PE on Tuesday and Friday.

Dear Parents,

Happy Friday!  I hope that the New Year 2019 is treating you well!

Thank you to our room parents, especially Heidi Siguaw, and all of the other parents who made our winter party a success.  The kids had a blast!
We are beginning to implement the Fountas and Pinnell Word Study program, which is part of our new literacy materials. Therefore, weekly Dictado will no longer be assigned.  The word study program incorporates phonics, spelling, and vocabulary lessons.
I hope that you received the kindergarten-3rd grade“Must Write” word list in your child’s Friday folder last week.  Please consider helping your child practice spelling these words at home. Thank you for your support!

Literacy:
We started our second narrative writing unit.  Students read a narrative called Trapped about a baby bird that is rescued.  They then wrote a continuation of the story. They were required to use the same characters and setting, but they had creative licence to decide what happened after the bird was rescued.  We will continue another week of narrative writing next week and then will start our second informative writing unit.

Math:
This week, we continued Unit 4, Addition and Subtraction of Multi-digit Numbers. We worked on rounding numbers to the nearest hundred and ten.  Please practice rounding with your child at the store and when you are going out to eat by asking questions like: About how much money do you think we are going to spend? Students also explored strategies to add multi-digit numbers.

Science:
This week we continued our Metric Measurement and Matter unit.  We are investigating the characteristics of the three states of matter: solid, liquid, and gas. We are also learning about how matter can change phases.
